What is Scottish sea glass?
For centuries, glass factories lined the coastlines of Scotland and dumped their waste glass directly into the sea. Glass factories were a vital part of Scottish industrialisation, history and economy and helped people access food and drink easier - commercialising the food and drink industry. Over decades and even centuries, this glass became beautifully tumbled and frosted by the sea salt, waves, sand abrasion and a chemical reaction with the salt in the water and the lime in the glass. Today, little fragments of this glass can be found on Scottish beaches as it is a nod to the factories that no longer exist. It is also possible that the glass found its own way into the ocean via ports, pirates, trade or simply by accident.
About this pendant:
This "bottle green" sea glass pebble likely originates from the early 1600-mid 1750's by the thickness of the glass. Over centuries the sea has tumbled this glass into a perfect pebble. The pendant measures around 45mm in height.
