What is Scottish sea glass?
For centuries, glass factories lined the coastlines of Scotland and dumped their waste glass directly into the sea. This was a vital part of Scottish industrialisation, history and economy and helped people access food and drink easier. Over decades and even centuries, this glass became beautifully tumbled and frosted by the sea salt, waves, sand abrasion and a chemical reaction with the salt in the water and the lime in the glass. Today, little fragments of this glass can be found on Scottish beaches as it is a nod to the factories that no longer exist. It is also possible that the glass found its own way into the ocean via ports, pirates, trade or simply by accident.
About this ring:
The turquoise sea glass in this ring likely originates from 1837 - 1900 and was most likely from decorative Victorian tableware or seltzer bottles. Turquoise is one of the rarest sea glass colours in the world.
